10th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

The workshop theme “European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI): State of the Art” reflects the maturing condition of the development of SDIs in Europe, at local, regional, cross-border, National and European levels. The workshop aims to present, through presentations, discussion panels and poster sessions, the broad range of SDIs implemented or currently under development across Europe. This publication will contain selected papers from the workshop and the recommendations arising from the discussions during the workshop. Workshop on Spatial Planning and Geographic Information

22nd June 2004 r. Warsaw, Poland - Sheraton Hotel
Street: B. Prusa 2

How to discover the power and benefits of GI&GIT in a field of Spatial Planning?
Scientists and practitioners will share case studies on how to leverage of an effectiveness of the decision-making processes? How to attract participation of citizens in spatial planning procedure and foster competitiveness of local communes and regions? One day workshop organized by The Centre for Excellence of GI&GIT for Spatial Planning and Institute of Spatial Management and Housing in Warsaw will take place in Sheraton Warsaw a day prior to the 10th EC GI & GIS Workshop, ESDI: State of the Art. The Centre (www.igpik.waw.pl) launched its activities in September 2002 in a frame of 5th FP IST-2001-38720 project. The Centre’s mission is the improvement of the spatial planning process through efficient use of geospatial information technology. The main goal of the European Union that we join is to create the strongest economy in the world while creating the society of knowledge and information. Supporting creation of local and regional economy and putting an end to perceiving spatial planning as a factor hampering economic development are challenges for spatial planning. At the same time one can expect that the processes of spatial planning will gradually use more and more electronic information flows and appropriate technology, including technology necessary for management of spatial information. Local communities and regions in Poland, some facing intensive growth, meet new challenges like absorption of structure funds. At the same time the practice of planning in networked democracy is far away from efficiency. It seems that a lot can be gained in that field from knowledge exchange between old and new member countries. In general event is intended as an overview of trends and good practices of the use of GI&GIS in a field of Spatial Planning all over Europe. Local and regional administrative staff responsible for spatial planning, governmental and business representatives and invited experts will participate in Workshop. Participation in Workshop is free of charge but only limited amount of places is available and will be assigned on a first-come basis. Applications can be send only by email to: fogel@igpik.waw.pl. Deadline for the applications is 15th June 2004. Successful Applicants will be in informed by e-mail.
